The National Gallery of Victoria is a famous museum and art gallery located in Melbourne, Australia. The museum was actually founded in the year 1861 and is the largest and most ancient art gallery located in Australia. The main gallery is situated in St Kilda road, in Melbourne Arts Precinct in Southbank, with a gallery at Federation Store.

When the time of opening of the gallery, Victoria remained as independent colony for another 10 years but during opening of Victorian Gold rush, it became Australia’s richest part and largest city of Melbourne. There were many wealthy citizens, who gave generous gifts including Alfred Felton, a famous industrialist who made it possible for National Gallery to purchase huge collections of art works from various countries. It presently holds more than 63,000 art works. The National Gallery of Victoria Art School was established in 1867 which is also related with the Gallery.
