New South Wales Art Gallery

The New South Wales Art Gallery is situated in The Domain, in the city of Sydney, in New South Wales, Australia. It was established during the year 1897. It is the 4th largest gallery in Australia and a significant public gallery in Sydney. Admission is free of cost for general exhibition, which features Asian, European and Australian Art.

During April 1871, there were many public meetings that were convened to establish Academy of Art to promote through art classes, some of fine arts and regular lectures and exhibitions. From 1879 to 1872, the major activity in organization was annual art exhibitions. During the year 1880, the Annual meeting was held in 9th century and was dissolved during Academy. The name was changed as National Art Gallery of New South Wales in the year 1883. The gallery was initiated by Act of Parliament during the year 1899. The Art gallery Act and Library Act in 1899 offered for general management and control of gallery. In the main entrance, the equestrian statue, Offering of Peace by Gilbert Peace was added during the year 1926.

The display of fine arts in Sydney International Exhibition during the year 1879 to 1880 became as the starting point government collection which was controlled was Royal Art Society of New South Wales. But most of the collections were destroyed during the year 1882 due to Garden palace Fire. After this, the member of Art society along with trustees from Academy of Art spent another 13 years debating with the Government and press for Art Galleries. The trustees of Academy of Art wanted as private architect but the Government wished to give the work to colonial Architect.

After agreeing upon the website, James Barnet has retired in 1895 and Walter Liberty Vernon, the famous colonial Architect, was assigned the work. As temporary measure, John Horbury Hunt, the private architect designed the small structure for temporarily house collection that was built during the year 1885. The building was created by new gallery and was opened during the year 1897. The design of the Gallery was very conservative and was an example of neo-Greek temple as portico for a famous Sydney public institution.

In 1897, the 1st two picture galleries were opened and another 2 during the year 1899. They also added a water color gallery in 1901 and the Grand Oval Lobby was completed in 1902. There are many works of famous artists in the gallery.
