The National Gallery of Victoria is a famous museum and art gallery located in Melbourne, Australia. The museum was actually founded in the year 1861 and is the largest and most ancient art gallery located in Australia. The main gallery is situated in St Kilda road, in Melbourne Arts Precinct in Southbank, with a gallery at Federation Store.

When the time of opening of the gallery, Victoria remained as independent colony for another 10 years but during opening of Victorian Gold rush, it became Australia’s richest part and largest city of Melbourne. There were many wealthy citizens, who gave generous gifts including Alfred Felton, a famous industrialist who made it possible for National Gallery to purchase huge collections of art works from various countries. It presently holds more than 63,000 art works. The National Gallery of Victoria Art School was established in 1867 which is also related with the Gallery. It was actual centre for art training in Australia till the year 1910. The graduates from school started to become one of significant artists of Australia.

The art gallery is currently spread over 2 building over short distance from one another in southern end of CBD. The International Collection contains works by Marco Palmezzano, Gian Lorenzo Bernin, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Paolo Uccello, Paolo Veronese, Paolo Veronese. The gallery has started to increase in different a area which includes the initial leader in photography, fashion, textiles and Aboriginal art from Australia. It has range of collections from different areas like Greek vases, European ceramics, Egyptian Artifacts and a collection of different art works from Australia.

The recent addition to collection is “Rest on Flight into Egypt with Angels and Saint Catherine” by Paris Bordone. They purchased this artwork for 3.8 million USD from a private dealer. The Angel sculpture is a famous artwork and which was removed for relocating to Birranung Marr. The National Gallery of Victoria has many exhibitions called blockbusters which start with Impressionist artwork including Masterpieces from Musee d’Orsay during the year 2004, The Love Letter, a famous painting of Vermeer from Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. It was first time the painting of Vermeer has been shoed in Australia. There are many other Caravaggio paintings from 2004. There were many other exhibitions organized by the National Art gallery of Victoria.
