The Metropolitan Art Museum, which is shortly called as The Met is famous art Museum situated in eastern land of Central Park along with the Museum Mile in City of New York. The museum has permanent collection of more than 2 million art works, which is separated into 19 curatorial departments. The main building which is called simply as “the Met” is the largest art gallery in the world and there is also 2nd location which is much smaller situated in Upper Manhattan that features only medieval art.
The museum of art has permanent collection of art work from traditional antiquity and from Ancient Egypt, sculptures and painting from many European master and very good collection of modern art from America. The Metropolitan Museum of Art also contains holdings of Asian, Africa, and Oceanic, Islamic and Byzantine art. The museum contains many encyclopedic collections of costumes, accessories, musical instruments, armor and antique weapons from around the world. There are many notable interiors which range from first century Rome through recent American Design and is permanently installed in galleries of Met.
It was founded by a team of American Citizens during the year 1870. The founders include financiers and businessmen and many leading artists and thinkers who wish to open museum for bringing education for the people of America. It was opened during the year 1872 and is located originally at 5th avenue. The Met measure more than 400 meters and occupies around 2,000,000 sq.ft. The parliament collection of the Met is cared and exhibited by many curatorial departments all of them are specialized of scholars and curators and 4 dedicated departments and people of scientific research. There are more than twelve thousand examples of American decorative art which ranges from late 17th to early 20th century. The department maintains 25 period rooms in museum which creates a complete room which includes the furnishings. The department also has 25 period rooms in museum which is noted for furnishings. The initial art holdings of American decorative arts were obtained, through donation given by Margaret Olivia, wife of famous financier Russell Sage.
The Met placed much emphasis for American Art and the 1st piece of art which entered the Met’s collection was allegorical sculpture from Hiram Powers which was titles California and was acquired during the year 1870. In recent years, the collection of the Metropolitan was gathered for including many paintings, 600 sculptures and more than 2,600 drawings.
